It Can’t Get Any Worse
Have you heard that refrain? I hear it more than I would like to admit. People ring their hands and bemoan the state of our nation. They then link this fall to our treatment of abortion. They go on to say God’s judgment is at hand because we won’t stop this unethical treatment of the unborn.
Why is that? What about abortion sent it over the edge? What about our country was great before abortion was legalized in 1973? Various forms of segregation existed all the way into 1975. So God thought highly of our country and our values as blacks were lynched in the south? He loved the fact that they were treated as inferior? Are we saying that God was pleased with our thoroughly spiritual nature?
What about corporate greed? Was Gordon Gekko a preacher?
I’m not for abortion but I do wonder how it became what God couldn’t stand, how everything was good and godly before.

Excellent thoughts and questions! Along the same lines it bothers me to hear someone always praying, “Come Quickly Lord Jesus” get us out of this mess. As if we don’t have a responsibility to be Christ to this generation as Christians.

Abortion is blamed in part because American Christians want to maintain the blissful myth of the Eisenhower Utopia. If everything Christian would just return to how things were in the ’50s, this country would be strong again!
Just don’t mention racism, nuclear bombing, government murdering of college students, sexual abuse that simply went unreported for decades… you might burst their bubble and they might get the idea that human society has been broken since Eden and that the kingdom of God has a greater mission than catapulting people into heaven.
Did that sound bitter or sarcastic? I, too, get frustrated with the idea that our nation “fell”.
