A Hug

April 11, 2008

Recently I was eating lunch with the kids when I noticed someone familiar. It was one of the students who comes for our tutoring on Wednesday nights.

I waved and said hi and I could tell he wanted to talk. I went over to him to say hello and reached out to shake his hand. He would have none of the handshake. No, he instead insisted upon a hug.

Now this was a little awkward. Me in the middle of the school cafeteria with a child who is not mine giving me a hug but that is what he needed.

You know that is the best thing about our tutoring program. It has a lot more to do with showing love and caring than anything else we do. This guy went from someone who hated to read to a guy who won’t put a book down and that is great, but I must admit it is even greater that he recognizes me at school and wants a hug.
