Caretaker

One of the hard things about leadership for me is the idea of being a caretaker. Many people prefer a caretaker over a leader. You see a caretaker just keeps track of things and people. No change. No worries about doing something different, certainly no one to push or give direction.

And yet if you look at someone like Aaron you see the danger of being a caretaker. In Exodus 32 the people come to Aaron and make their demands. Aaron is just watching over the people as they wait for Moses return. Without someone giving and holding to God’s direction what do they do? They demand another god to worship. Moses was clearly viewed as their leader, in 32:1 it says, “Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt.”

No, when people have no leadership they begin demanding what they want. Even with leadership they struggle with following God’s plan. Look at how many times those following Moses rebelled. No, leadership doesn’t guarantee that problems won’t occur, it just insures that we are following God’s direction.

That shouldn’t matter to someone who truly wants to lead. We have too many caretakers calling themselves leaders. We don’t need anymore.

In many ways God has reminded me that I to often act as a caretaker. May that no longer be true.

    I think this is such an important subject.
    Thank you Darin for your thoughts.
    I think that as leaders we need to understand that God wants us to take care of his Church, his flock, his children. Love it and care for it in all the ways we need both physically and spiritually. Again, great post. Keep up the great work you do with your blog. It is defiantly one of the best out there!

    Darin, your analogy of a caretaker is similar to that of a manager. It has been said that those that are good managers don’t make good leaders and those that are good leaders aren’t necessarily the best managers. As a leader you have to keep doing what you are called to do, which is cast vision and lead with authority. however, some fall victim to trying to lead when they need to first manage and cast vision, and therefore lead and not have others follow or follow too far behind. In order to lead, someone needs to be the caretaker or manager. Hopefully the systems are in place to give you the freedom you desire with caretakers that are fully committed to your vision and completely supportive of your leadership.

    I hear what you are saying. The idea that struck me was not that you must manage because any organization needs both, but that in my life I have seen many churches ask the “Leader” to simply be a caretaker.

    I agree that you need both management and leadership in a church. I think Jethro’s council to Moses right before Mount Sinai fits management. As they move forward they needed better management. In Exodus 18:13 you find Moses managing the people and Jethro sees this and says he should find able men to help manage the situation.

    For me a caretaker is different in that they aren’t looking for someone to manage progress but someone to protect the status quo or even keep from moving forward or managing.
