A Third Way: Powerless

August 30, 2010

Why don’t we try that on for size? Instead of looking for power why not simply confess that we are powerless? Because guess what, currently it is all about power and you are being used.

“But Darin, we need a voice.” Only if you are interested in power do you need a voice. “But Darin they are overrunning the value that made our country great.” I hate to break it to you but greatness has nothing to do with our country. (Hint, hint, his initials are JC.)

Now you know why I have no friends.

We are sold the lie that we need to choose a side because we need some power. You may be saying, “No that isn’t it, we just want what is right.” That has everything to do with power people.

The slogans that I hear tell you everything you need to know.

“Taking Back America”

“Throw Out Activist Judges”

“Close Our Borders”

Notice what you need to make these happen? Force. Now I understand this is figurative language but it also says what those who hold such signs believe in, power. We need the power to make this happen.

Why don’t we choose the third way? Why don’t we leave the take backs and throw outs behind and simply be Jesus? I’m not sure what legislation is required to do that. It is currently happening all over the world under governments much less concerned with human rights or equality or democracy.

I personally think it is an insult to believers around the world who worship in hiding and seem to believe in Jesus just fine.

Why the third way? Well, other than it is Jesus way? That should be enough but it probably won’t be for some.

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11

I’m waiting for these slogans to show up on signs.

“You Can Have Our Country, We Only Want Jesus”

“A Love No Government Has Ever Understood”

“Because Jesus Didn’t Take He Gave”

For me that is the third way and you can find in passages like these.

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

I understand and I’m not trying to be rude. I’m concerned about our country and where it is headed. I just disagree on the way.

Here is some of the disconnect between americans and the bible. Our country was founded on the idea that the power should be in the hands of the people, while the new testament came out of a time period in which that was all but an impossibility. so it doesn’t really tell us what do do with political power…it assumes that the people reading it didn’t have any.

Steve, Jesus was given that option by Satan himself. He declined and so should we.
