Event Based Community Impact: She Screamed

January 14, 2011

That is what her mother said. Before they even had a chance to hear the entire voice mail message her daughter was screaming. What did the message say? What was so important that her fifth grade daughter immediately responded with screams of joy? She was selected as one of the four best essays for the Write On Essay Contest held each year by New Heights Church of Owasso.

Recently I went to Ator Heights Elementary to present the winners with their plaques and certificates redeemable for a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. While children from all public schools in Owasso were eligible and many students entered, all of those recognized came from this one school.

As I waited to present the four students with their awards the parents asked me to tell them more about the contest. There was surprise when I told them it was a church sponsoring the event. I explained that we wanted to encourage children to use their God given talents, to recognize them when they do their best. I went on to talk about our tutoring and all of the other efforts that we do because we want to see children succeed.

The children finally arrived. They received their rewards and we took pictures. I will be submitting them to the local paper and different community organizations. Why? Well because we love to hear when a child screams. We love it when a parent tells us their child was on cloud nine after hearing the news. We love to say Jesus loves you, cares about you and wants to see you do your best.

Not bad for an essay contest.

We never know what impact this will have on her future. It’s not even about the bond or the plaque. It’s about that sense of believing in the better way. It’s also great that she sees a face and a place that believes in the same thing.

Yes, that’s just an incredible scream.

Thanks James for dropping in. We do never know but we can be sure God receives the glory. Thanks again.
