Busy for a Reason

June 23, 2012

“You will need a frozen cake.”

How often do you expect to hear those words? For me I think the answer would be never. A frosted cake without question, one of those would come in handy on a weekly basis, at least until you stepped on the scales and decided that wasn’t such a good idea.

No, the woman on the other end of the phone definitely said frozen cake. So I spent Friday with our two daughters baking cakes so they could put them into the freezer. It is what you need to do if your daughters are in 4-H and are taking Cake Decorating. This is my first experience as an adult with 4-H. Upon moving to Delta we decided to give it a shot.

It makes our lives busy. If we were not in 4-H my Friday would have been much simpler. A little work in the office on my sermon for Sunday, a trip up to Colorado Christian Youth Camp in the evening and that would have been all. Instead I spent the majority of my afternoon running to get cake mixes, who knew you could mess those up, and a lot of time checking cakes so that we could get them into the freezer.

Here is the deal. I love my daughters and am glad they are having this experience but the odds of them becoming the next Cake Boss or Ace of Cakes is slim. Harsh words? I hope not. They have also done archery in 4-H and I don’t imagine they will end up on Top Shot or at the Olympics.

Being in 4-H is good for them. Being in 4-H is good for our family. Being in 4-H is good for me as a minister. 4-H is still a big thing out here. The county fair is going to be great. Being in 4-H has helped us meet people and make new friends. It helps connect us to our community.

I don’t think it is bad to be busy but I do believe it should be busy for a reason. I think too many Christians are busy just to be busy. Not busy so I can introduce people to Jesus or make a difference for the Kingdom. I constantly look at my schedule and try to make sure I am busy for a reason.

So this morning I woke up at 6:00 a.m. and then 7:00 a.m. and then 7:30 a.m. and, well I think you get the picture. Why? My body didn’t want me to be late taking the girls to their Cake Decorating class. The girls made it and we had the chance to meet others. Who knows what will come of it, maybe my daughters will become cake decorators but even if they don’t, we are not being busy without a reason.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17
