Survival of the Fittest…..

October 8, 2012

We do reap what we sow. Our culture has spent an incredible amount of time telling people they are nothing but their senses. Nothing but a long line of natural selection. You just happened to win out. You are just lucky to be on top of the food chain.

So what happens when people actually believe what they teach is true? When someone tells them they are not valuable or worthy of living or whatever? What happens when someone treats them like they are less than nothing and they decide it is true? What happens when they decide they are not strong enough?

Suicide attempts are on the rise. We want badly to stop it, to eradicate it. Nothing could be worse could it? A young person with an outlook on life so bleak that they decide ending life is better than living it? But think about it. Think about a world that says only the strong survive. That we are nothing but our impulses. When are impulses are bad what are we going to do? When someone tells us we are not strong and we believe them what choices are we going to make?

We rightly object to bullying. We shake our heads and institute programs to try and help. We work it into our Hollywood scripts. We make sure popular children’s programs touch on the subject. Think about it, if I think only the strong survive and that I came from nothing and am going nowhere what incentive do I have to be nice? If I determine I am more fit, and trust me with all of the you are special and amazing why would we be surprised when kids come to that conclusion, should we be shocked when someone turns their superiority into making someone else feel inferior?

Why not offer them hope? Why not let them know that life is often hard? That sin has stained creation and people often are ugly and mean? Why not let them know the truth about what is going on so that they are better equipped to handle life?

Why not let them know that this is not the end? That they are valuable and loved not because someone says they are amazing and special but because the Creator of the heavens and the earth said it is true? Why not teach people consaquences exist for their actions? That there is justice for the unrepentent bully? Why is that so bad? They claim that getting God out of culture will make things better and yet suicide is on the rise. I admit that we Christians fall short in holding up Jesus but that doesn’t change the truth.

42 “Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will bring justice to the nations.
2 He will not shout or cry out,
or raise his voice in the streets.
3 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4 he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”

Isaiah 42:1-4

To all of the smoldering wicks and the bruised reeds, don’t believe what they say, please don’t believe. Please don’t give up, Jesus came for you.
